CASE STUDIES / FEEDBACK
NHS Portsmouth CCG:
In Portsmouth we road-tested both the maturity matrix and the standards and evidence tool. We did this via individual self-assessment. In the time available we did not have an opportunity to get the entire governing board and executive to undertake this nor come together to review and debate the results but we can see using both these tools we could do this and it would be helpful in our thinking as we develop our governance arrangements further. We found both tools to be useful to us and felt they worked strongly in partnership together given they are based on the same framework as standards and elements. The maturity matrix allows individual to do a high level assessment of where they think we are which can then be tested if wished through a deep dive of looking and reviewing specific evidence to check whether perception and anecdote are backed up in evidence. By setting out your aspirations for next steps on the maturity matrix you can then use the standards and evidence tool to help you identify the gaps and therefore actions you need to take to meet your aspirations. These tools should be a helpful possible resource to CCGs as part of their overall organisational development and maturity of their governance arrangements.
NHS Dorset CCG:
We trialled all three tools: the Standards and Evidence tool, the Board Observation Guide and the Maturity Matrix.
Whilst everyone will have their own view on what outcome measures are indicators of good governance, each of the tools provided a method for CCGs to assess their governance achievements objectively.
The Standards and Evidence tool provided an excellent starting point from which to create an easy to reference gap analysis. The Board Observation Tool and Maturity Matrix together provided triangulation and validated the initial findings from the Standards and Evidence Tool.
Taken together, the tools confirmed our own assessment that we needed to focus and work harder with our membership.
The Maturity Matrix will provide a convenient set of measures to help the CCG reconcile how it is performing against how its members believe it is performing.
We look forward to using the tools annually to help us develop and measure our progress.
